An Open Letter to the Residents of Ennis, Texas
From Harriett Adams, Chairman, “Catch the Vision for the Lights of Ennis”
A 501C3 Non-Profit Charitable Organization
In our sixth year of “The Lights of Ennis” we find ourselves $10,000 short in our fund-raising. The reason for this is the rightful concern and generosity shown the victims of Hurricanes Katrina and Rita by the citizens of Ennis. Katrina hit just as fund-raising for “The Lights” began and Rita crossed into Texas and Louisiana the weekend of our final events. Attention was focused on those whose lives and homes were swept away and this was the right thing.
But now “The Lights of Ennis” need your help. Please don't wait for someone else to make a donation or for someone to ask you personally. We are a small group doing a big job each year. Take ownership of this project now. When you take your children and grandchildren downtown this December, you can say to them: “We helped make this possible.” What better way to reconfirm that life goes on in the face of tragedies and setbacks than to illuminate the skyline of historic downtown and Pierce Park to cheer children, adults and the hurricane victims still among us? What better way to insure the healthy future of our town than to create a quality-of-life environment that encourages the next generation to want to stay and build on the foundation of family values? There's a certain feeling one gets when remembering Christmases past with family and friends in small town America. That feeling lasts a lifetime and it makes people return home.
On December 1st, our wonderful, lighted Christmas parade will travel through a glowing downtown built in the nineteenth century. Children and adults can enjoy the pleasures of a simpler time. The great majority of you have never contributed to “The Lights of Ennis.” I'm asking you to do so this year. Sacrifice a cup of coffee, a pack of cigarettes, or a drink. Do this for your town, for yourself, for your children and grandchildren. Help create hometown memories that will last a lifetime. Your donation will be a gift to every Ennis child and adult…a living Christmas card. There is no way of knowing how many treasured Christmas memories you will create for one another. Be a player, not just a spectator. “The Lights of Ennis” does the following for you:
Enhances the quality of life for the entire community
Shows pride and commitment to our historic downtown
Builds a positive community image for all to see
Attracts tourists, new businesses and new residents
Brings new dollars into Ennis that enrich every aspect of our
community life and that impacts your life and your family's
